Each month, we highlight an artwork as part of our Artwork of the Month series. This series is a part of The National Lottery Heritage Fund project, 'Our Hospital: conserving, curating and responding to St George's Art and Heritage Collection'.

This month, the artwork was chosen by staff and patients in the Infusion Suite at St George's Hospital, Tooting. Our Art Collection Officer, Rachel, visited the Infusion Suite earlier this month to lead the discussion of the artworks and the vote.

The 5 November is Fireworks Night, with the sky lit up with bright, glittering displays. So, this month, Rachel shortlisted three artworks from St George's Art and Heritage Collection on the theme of 'Fireworks Night'.  After discussing all the artworks, the staff and patients voted for Blue Rocker I by Anthony Frost as their artwork of the month.

About the artwork:

This abstract artwork is made up of large vibrant blocks of colour. It is a monoprint, a printing technique which results in a one-of-a-kind print. In monoprinting, a design is made onto a plate made of a material like metal or plastic. The design can be made using a variety of techniques, using printing inks, mark making and collage to create a unique design. The print can also be reworked after printing, using a variety of materials.

The staff and patients in the Infusion Suite found this artwork calm and serene. When they were told that the artist was based in Cornwall, they discussed how the colours were reminiscent of the seaside, with the blues of the sea and yellow of the sand. One staff member was drawn to this artwork as he is from North Wales, he said it made him think of the sea, which he misses being near. Some found the cool tones of the artwork relaxing, but another said they felt the artwork 'br[ought] the energy'.

This artwork is on display in St James Wing at St George's Hospital, Tooting.
