Francesca Ellison takes on the Reading Half Marathon
07 April 2023
Despite feeling very nervous, and only running up to 5k until about a year ago, she wanted to take on this challenge to specifically fundraise for our Time for a Change Appeal after her niece, Henrietta, received life-saving surgery at St George’s Hospital at one day old, and continues to be treated at the hospital.
Francesca wanted to raise money for both the staff and other families who need the support, expertise, and facilities at St George's and so that the facilities available match the expertise of the medical teams.
When her niece was in the hospital, Francesca and her family were so grateful for the expertise, care and compassion received, saying: "Visiting her in NICU in those early days was tough, but the staff and everyone who works behind the scenes to keep the hospital able to provide such excellent care were simply amazing."
However, they noticed how the facilities could be improved to match the hospital’s current needs, being in hospital is hugely difficult for children and young people and Francesca wanted to raise money to ensure that it is the least stressful and frightening experience for all children that have to come in.
Francesca said: "Thank you - without everyone who works at St George's (in all roles required to operate the hospital) we wouldn't have my amazing niece. No words will ever be enough to express our gratitude for all they have done, and continue to do, not only for us but for everyone they work with."
She has raised an amazing £335 so far but would love your support, you can donate here: Francesca's JustGiving
