An exclusive evening at Claridge’s, hosted by renowned photographer and St George’s Hospital Charity ambassador Gemma Levine FRSA, brought together leading figures from the worlds of art, performance, and healthcare to celebrate the incomparable Dame Judi Dench in her 90th birthday year- while raising vital funds for lymphoedema research.

The event, conceived and led by Gemma Levine, is expected to raise over an incredible £40,000 for the Lymphoedema Research Fund (LRF) at St George’s Hospital Charity, supporting pioneering advances in the diagnosis and treatment of this often under-recognised condition. The evening paid tribute to Dame Judi’s extraordinary career and lifelong contribution to the arts, while shining a spotlight on a cause deeply personal to Gemma.

Guests were treated to a unique live sculpture sitting by acclaimed sculptor Frances Segelman FRSA MRSS, who created a portrait bust of Dame Judi Dench before an audience of 200 guests. Known for her dynamic style and celebrated portfolio- including sculptures of HM The King and the late Queen- Frances delivered a moving and memorable tribute.

Gemma Levine FRSA, began her career as a photographer in 1975. In a career spanning half a century she has published 27 books of photographs and shown over 60 exhibitions worldwide. After being diagnosed with lymphoedema 15 years ago, she has since become one of the UK’s most passionate and vocal advocates for awareness and research into the condition. Through books, campaigns, and high-profile events, Gemma has now raised over £150,000 for the LRF.

“Dame Judi has given so much to the world through her art- it felt only right to honour her in this way while supporting a cause that’s so close to my heart,” said Gemma. “I’m overwhelmed by the generosity and warmth from all our guests tonight.”

Guests also heard from Professor Peter Mortimer, who founded the lymphoedema service and research programme at St George’s Hospital nearly 40 years ago.

Working with Gemma has been an honour; her tireless commitment to raising awareness and funds has been invaluable in advancing much-needed research. Thanks to efforts like tonight’s, we have now granted our first research award-  an essential step towards better care and outcomes for patients.”

The evening also featured a special musical performance by internationally acclaimed soprano Katerina Mina, who captivated the audience with a heartfelt birthday song dedicated to Dame Judi. Music by Sir Karl Jenkins, one of the world’s most performed living composers, played throughout the reception. In two surprise moments that deeply moved guests, Finty Williams, Dame Judi’s daughter, and close friend Simon Callow each delivered powerful readings in her honour.

The sculpture will be finished and cast in bronze at Frances’s studio following the event. Once completed, it will be sold to raise vital funds for the charity.
