Help Lisa be 'By Their Side' this Christmas
17 December 2024
"It’s not unusual for me to spend Christmas Day working on the wards here at St George’s, bringing a little joy and sparkle to your local hospital during the festive season. I love to sing songs with the older folks that I care for – something which is particularly powerful for patients living with dementia. Singing some of the traditional Christmas tunes they remember from childhood brings comfort and joy, and sparks vivid memories of their youth. It’s wonderful to see the smiles on their faces when they remember how it feels to celebrate this time of year.
A few Christmases ago, a patient told me he was feeling sad about missing out on his annual turkey sandwich. Having to spend Christmas in hospital meant he thought he would not get to enjoy his family’s festive tradition. Not on my watch! I spoke to the catering team and made sure he could enjoy his delicious treat. Those are the little extras, the special kindnesses, that we all try to bring to our patients at St George’s Hospital. We go the extra mile all year round, and Christmas is no different.

When I was younger, I looked after my grandad and siblings. I started my career in childcare, then took the step to working in hospitals with older patients on the dementia ward. It is not always an easy job. But knowing that I can make a difference to a vulnerable patient is really rewarding.
This Christmas, you can join me in making that difference. You can send seasons greetings to a patient, and be by their side during the festive season, helping them feel less alone. I hope you will also be inspired to send a donation to your local hospital charity. Thank you, and Merry Christmas."
