Investing in Staff Wellbeing
20 July 2023
The Nuffield Trust report's findings on the increase in staff illness within the NHS have highlighted the pressing need to prioritise staff wellbeing. At a time when hospitals and community services have witnessed a surge in sickness absence, it is crucial to acknowledge the toll that the pandemic and its aftermath have taken on healthcare professionals.
Fortunately, St George's Hospital Charity is leading by example, channelling its resources to invest in staff wellbeing and making a positive impact on the lives of those who tirelessly serve the community.
Recognising the importance of fostering a healthy and supportive environment for its staff, St George's Hospital Charity has been instrumental in initiating various grants and schemes that cater exclusively to healthcare workers. These initiatives aim to alleviate the physical, mental, and emotional strains that staff members face daily, reinforcing the notion that caring for caregivers is a fundamental aspect of delivering exceptional patient care.
One of the notable contributions made by the Charity is the establishment of a new outdoor gym exclusively for staff within St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Recognising the significance of physical health, this facility allows healthcare professionals to take a well-deserved break and engage in rejuvenating workouts. Furthermore, with the support of NHS Charities Together, this initiative exemplifies the power of collaboration in nurturing staff wellbeing.
Creating serene and peaceful spaces for relaxation is another crucial aspect of the Charity's efforts. The outdoor seating area behind Blackshaw Annexe, adorned with lush foliage, provides staff members with a tranquil retreat to unwind and recharge during their hectic workdays.
Moreover, several other gardens and outside areas developed by the dedicated gardening team offer additional opportunities for staff to find solace amid the bustling hospital environment.

"It's so good to have a space outside away from your desk to enjoy your lunch, especially as the weather has been so great. It makes such a difference to have somewhere that you can also have non-work chats with your colleagues.”
Acknowledging the growing trend of staff members cycling to work, the Charity has taken the initiative to fund a cycle scheme, a lockable bike rack, and a cyclists' shower block.
These amenities not only promote environmentally friendly commuting but also foster a sense of camaraderie among colleagues who share this healthy habit.

Mental wellbeing is equally prioritised through the funding of therapy group sessions and wellbeing sessions for staff. The impact of these programs on improving overall wellbeing and mental health cannot be understated, as highlighted by the positive feedback from the participants themselves.
During challenging times, it is essential to acknowledge the sacrifices healthcare workers make, even during special occasions. Recognising this, St George's Hospital Charity has approved grants for Christmas parties for hospital staff, providing an opportunity for them to come together and celebrate, even amidst the demands of their work.
The Charity's support extends beyond physical and mental health initiatives. Acknowledging the demands of the medical profession, a sofa bed has been provided for surgeons working late hours, offering them a space to rest and recharge between life-saving operations. Additionally, funding women's football sessions and other recreational activities fosters a sense of community and work-life balance among staff.
The Kaido Challenge, launched as part of the St George's Health and Wellbeing Challenge at the start of 2023, has been an astounding success, motivating hundreds of staff members to actively engage with their health and witness remarkable improvements in various aspects of their wellbeing.
"I am sad that it is over. I have loved it and it has brought the team closer. I want to keep up the physical activity, mindfulness and healthier food choices. I will also keep working on my sleep so that hopefully, I will be a happier healthier me!"
These initiatives are a testament to the dedication and generosity of the supporters of St George's Hospital Charity. By investing in staff wellbeing, the Charity has shown a deep commitment to enhancing the patient and staff experience in St George's and Queen Mary's Hospitals.
