James Garnett's Arctic Challenge

04 June 2023

Fundraiser James Garnett took on an awe-inspiring challenge through Svalbard to raise funds for St George's Hospital's Renal Department after they saved his life.

James GarnettIn March 2023, James Garnett embarked on an awe-inspiring journey through the challenging terrain of Svalbard, near the North Pole. For 13 gruelling days, he skied in sub-zero temperatures, camped amidst polar bears, all to raise funds for St George's Hospital Charity's renal department where he was treated years ago.

James said, "St George's Hospital has provided exceptional healthcare for years. The renal department operates out of temporary cabins, and I wanted to make a difference and say thank you for saving my life."

Braving the biting Arctic cold, James faced -10 to -30 degrees Celsius while skiing across Svalbard. Equipped with a sled carrying supplies, he journeyed through the stunning but unforgiving landscape, with 24-hour daylight and the presence of 3,000 roaming polar bears. His courage and determination were truly remarkable.

On his return, James said, "The trip was tough, rewarding, incredible fun, and well worth all the work - pretty unique." He has raised an incredible £1,070 so far and continues to pledge his support.
