Sophie Fernandez: MICROCOSM
Ingredients Restaurant, first floor, Lanesborough Wing
Sophie Fernandez studied in Toronto and in Montreal, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University. She later practiced in Vancouver for a few years, receiving an Explorations Grant from The Canada Council and a Project Grant from B.C. Cultural Services. In 2007 she received a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London.
Sophie’s dual French and Spanish cultural backgrounds inspire her practice often merging fine arts with traditional crafts. Born in France, she lives in London since 1998. She exhibits in hospitals, public spaces and health related settings.
Her love for observing nature, together with the use of a microscope and her curiosity for cells culminate in her new body of work ‘Microcosm’. Here, her playful imagination weaves together these elements with rich colours and circular shapes echoing cells’ intrinsic spontaneous movements symbolically representing healthy living cells and wellbeing.
Since 1990, the Arts Team at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have curated and developed engaging exhibitions, commissions, and participatory arts programmes to enhance the wellbeing of the 3.5 million patients who visit the Trust each year.
The programme is supported by St George’s Hospital Charity.
