London Marathon Showcase: Andy Carey

27th February 2018

“Two family members have received fantastic treatment...”

This week we will introduce you to Andy Carey, another one of our 2018 Virgin London Marathon runners who will take on the 26.2 miles this April in aid of St George’s Hospital Charity. Andy is the Director of Vans Express Ltd in Sutton and chose to support the Gordon Smith Ward after two of his family members received treatment there.

Donations to the ward make a huge difference, helping to supply new state of the art equipment, facilities, and additional staff training that is above and beyond what is usually provided. Support like Andy’s enables the dedicated team of staff to continue to provide the best possible care to all patients who come through their doors.

Andy said: “Two family members have received fantastic treatment and support from various parts of St Georges over the last couple of years. I hope that not only does the money raised go some way towards helping give back a small amount of the care and treatment given out at St Georges, but that we are also able to raise awareness of Lymphoma, something I certainly knew nothing about until recently.”

Readers can find out more about this kind of cancer by visiting the Lymphoma Association website.

Andy also said: “I’d like to say thank you to Dr Ruth Pettengell, Dr Peng, Dr Pickering, and every single staff member on Gordon Smith ward for all they do every day, helping people back on the road to recovery.”

Lizzie Wilson, Community and Events Fundraiser, said: “It always means a lot to hospital staff when relatives of patients keep us in their thoughts, sometimes long after initial treatment has finished. Fundraisers like Andy always have such a big impact on the wards and make a lasting difference. The whole team would like to thank Andy for his amazing support.”

If you would like to sponsor Andy’s London Marathon you can do so by visiting his JustGiving page here. You can also donate directly through the general donations page on our website, mentioning Gordon Smith in the ‘extra information’ box provided.
