A vital need for emergency accommodation

11th April 2018

St George’s Hospital Charity launched a fundraising appeal last year - the Relative’s Accommodation Appeal - to provide emergency hotel accommodation for relatives of patients at St George’s and Queen Mary’s hospitals in south London when they need to be close at hand unexpectedly.

Local resident, Sandra, had the need for emergency accommodation from another hospital last year when on holiday with her husband, Paul.  Paul was taken ill and needed vascular surgery whilst they were in Devon which meant Sandra was left without anywhere to stay and without transport.

Sandra initially checked into a local B&B, and explained; “Paul became very distressed because I was walking back to the B&B each night in the dark.  After a couple of days I was given a room of my own in relatives’ accommodation on the hospital site which made Paul noticeably calmer.  It also made life much easier for me as I could wash clothes, cook and be on hand within minutes if needed.”

“Very early in the morning of the 10 September I was called to Paul's bedside. He died shortly after. Had I been off site I would have been too late.”

St George's Hospital Charity would like to give families the reassurance of being a stone’s throw away from either St George’s Hospital or Queen Mary’s Hospital. Without access to accommodation, families would be faced with the difficult choice of staying with a gravely ill patient with no chance of a bed, or even having to return home and not being close at hand.

Providing accommodation for next of kin will help to alleviate some of the emotional, practical, and financial strains during a very difficult time and keep a relative close at hand. But the charity cannot provide this at present until funds are raised.

When Sandra spoke of the difference this made, she said; “This accommodation helped me in so many ways and was due entirely to the fundraising of strangers whose family and friends would probably never need to avail themselves of it.”

“I urge you to do whatever you can to support St. George's Hospital Charity to provide something similar for the families of patients being treated here.”
