Bella tackles grief through 10k challenge

11th May 2018

During the May Bank Holiday, Bella Talbutt, an 18 year old from Cobham in Surrey, will take on the Vitality 10k in aid of the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CT ICU) at St George’s Hospital.

She is running in memory of her stepfather Nigel Halsey, who sadly passed away in 2015.  Bella’s step-sisters, Caroline and Jenny, took part in a challenge last year in memory of Nigel, raising several thousand pounds for the CT ICU relatives’ room by completing a 100km walk.

Bella is also raising funds for CT ICU to help make the relatives’ rooms as comfortable as possible for families who find themselves there when a loved one is taken seriously ill.

Understandably it will be an emotional experience for Bella, who was just 15 years old when her step-father died. She said: “At such a young age, the shock regarding the severity of his illness and the suddenness his death denied me the chance to grieve. Now three years later instead of running away from this, I am facing it by running the Vitality 10k.”

On her fundraising page she explains that: “Whilst nothing can fill the void created by his death, any money raised will help to create a nicer environment in the CT ICU waiting rooms where families in the same position have to spend large amounts of time desperately waiting for good news.  No amount given is too small and I am so grateful to everyone who has donated.”

Lizzie Wilson, Community and Events Fundraiser, said: “Losing a parent as a teenager is a huge thing to have to come to terms with at such a young age. I have so much respect and admiration for Bella for taking on this challenge. Not only for herself, but in order to make a huge difference for the thousands of families who will visit loved ones in the CT ICU in the future. Bella, thank you so much for joining Team George’s. We are all so grateful for your support.”
