St George's celebrates NHS70

6th July 2018

Yesterday, Thursday 5 July 2018, St George’s Hospital proudly marked the 70th birthday of the NHS. It was a day full of celebration, commemoration and reflection on the remarkable achievements and successes of the NHS and St George’s Hospital over the last 70 years.

The celebrations began bright and early with 70 of our intrepid NHS members of staff walking from The Lanesborough (the site of St George's Hospital until the 1970s) to our current site today in Tooting.

Once back on home soil Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP officially opened the NHS 70th birthday celebrations at St George’s Hospital.

Dr Allin-Khan said: “It is absolutely superb being here today. I can’t think of anywhere better to celebrate than St George’s Hospital – my brother was born at St George’s, my daughters were born here and St George’s saved my father’s life. I still work here, I feel part of a St George’s family and part of an NHS family and I will always be proud to support St George’s. The staff here are incredible. I’ve never worked alongside a more fantastic team of people and I know St George’s Hospital Charity do such incredible work for the staff and patients here.”

As the day progressed, the Atkinson Morley wing of St George’s Hospital was transformed into a bustling fair with stalls from around the hospital showcasing the work and achievements of NHS staff and supporters. There was a cake baking competition, endless cups of tea to be enjoyed, and a staff rendition of ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ as part of the NHS Voices singalong.

The night capped off with 30 staff and supporters from St George’s Hospital Charity attending a preview screening of 24 Hours in A&E at the Channel 4 studios. We were among the first to witness the opening episode of season 16, and can assure you it’s one not to be missed.

All in all, a fabulous day to appreciate our amazing NHS staff and reflect on 70 wonderful years of public health in the UK.
