Coby's Alcatraz to San Francisco Challenge

25th January 2019

On 13 April 2019 Coby Bull, of Joel & Son Fabrics, will be swimming from Alcatraz Island to the shore of San Francisco. This is a mile and a half journey from the jail in strong currents across the Pacific Ocean, which no prisoner ever managed to successfully make. Coby is fully immersing himself into his swimming and shark defence training!

Coby is hoping to raise vital funds for St George’s Hospital Charity Children’s Appeal. These donations will go towards helping to bring colour and vibrancy to the children’s wards, employing more dedicated play specialists to reach children who are in isolation, and providing new technology such as tablets and electronic games to help all ages to learn and to play while in hospital.

Coby has said: “Nothing I do, even swimming with sharks, can come close to the bravery of the children who are treated at St George’s. Anything I can do to help them is truly a pleasure”

Coby, along with his colleagues at Joel & Son Fabrics, recently got involved with our Toy Appeal, and visited St George’s Hospital Charity with bags of amazing toys – some of which were distributed at Christmas and some that will be given out to the children on their birthdays and other special occasions. Even a small present can bring a lot of joy to a poorly child in hospital.

St George’s Hospital Charity aims to enhance the experience for all patients at St George’s Trust. We focus our efforts on funding medical equipment that is above and beyond that which the NHS could provide, supporting high-quality medical research and helping to enable new development projects within the hospital.

Mari-Louise White, Community and Events Fundraising Manager for St George’s Hospital Charity, said: “A huge thank you to Coby for taking on this incredible challenge. It’s down to the generosity of our supporters that we are able to continue raising vital funds which will have a real impact on both patients and staff.”
