Fantastic Fundraisers; Hiking the Andes! Nigel and Tara Gauld

2nd May 2019

‘We’re living the very life we’re enjoying every single day courtesy of St. George’s hospital’

On 4th May 2016, Tara Gauld had a brain haemorrhage and collapsed into a coma. Tara, her husband Nigel and their entire family spent several weeks in the Intensive Care Unit whilst Tara fought for her life. During this time, Tara underwent major surgery before finally being allowed home. A traumatic time for the entire family, the Gauld’s attempted to return to ‘normal’ life.

However, in 2018 Tara underwent a second round of surgery as her routine check-up discovered the aneurism had grown again. It went smoothly, with the desired results confirmed at a follow-up held only a few weeks later and Tara could once again get back to living her life, with both incidents having a profound impact on the entire family.

Nigel and Tara said ‘Without the skill and dedication of the staff at St George's, especially those in the Neurology Intensive Care Unit, we're confident our story wouldn't have had such a happy ending. Without their patience, humanity, compassion and understanding... I can almost guarantee we wouldn't have survived those desperate times.

Nigel and Tara chose to live their lives to the full from those moments onwards, using their need to give something back to the hospital to take on a huge challenge for the both of them- to trek the Andes and reach Machu Pichu in Peru. A trip they had always planned as a ‘holiday’ would be the outlet they wanted to use to say thank you to the hospital that saved Tara’s life.

Whilst the trip was originally planned for October 2018, with a few different injuries on the way they are there and ready to get going! Nigel and Tara have been training hard hiking the South Downs National Park, as well as raising incredible funds for St George’s Hospital. To celebrate they will also be there when they celebrate their 6th wedding anniversary!

Nigel and Tara had this message;
‘Despite trekking and tents being near the top of our worst nightmares list, we're committed to making it happen. Please help us blow past our target to give back to those who gave us the very life we're leading, with the prospects for a future which, without them... would never be.’
