Cardiac Rehabilitation - Mararthon Relay

13th June 2019

On 28 April (the same day as the London Marathon) the incredible Cardiac Rehabilitation team from St George’s Hospital organised a marathon relay for staff members, friends, family and patients from our cardiac rehabilitation unit.

The idea was to have a fun event that people of any ability could be involved in and to raise charitable funds for the department. There were a few hurdles along the way but luckily a treadmill and bike delivery occurred just in time to allow the event to take place ‘in motion’ around the hospital as well as on stationary equipment inside.

The relay was a combination of walks/jogs around the perimeter road of St George’s Hospital, as well as on the treadmills and shuttle walks on the gym. Everyone added their distances to the total to see how many marathon equivalents could be completed. The youngest participant was just 2 years old and the oldest 78 years with the team covering a total distance of 176.89km – the equivalent of just over 4 complete marathons! In total they raised £714.51 which will go towards improving the services for patients and their families.

Shannon Gleave, Community and Events Fundraiser, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to the Cardiac Rehabilitation team and everyone else that organised and took part in the marathon relay! It is great to see the trust’s staff come together with the community to support their hospital. The funds they’ve raised will help ensure that cardiac rehab can provide the best treatment possible for the patients, staff and their families.’
