600 mile cycle challenge in 5 days from Cornwall to Kent

16th August 2019

One of our incredible fundraisers Lukasz recently undertook a momentous 600 mile cycling challenge from Cornwall to Kent over a 5 day period

He decided to cycle and fundraise for St George’s because:

The hospital gives vital support to the community around where I live. I’m aware NHS services are massively underfunded, so collecting even a small amount could help some departments provide the best care possible – especially thinking of those who look after our youngest members

Lukasz chose the specific cycle from Cornwall to Kent because he’s always wanted to take on a longer endurance ride; previously he has completed a 300 mile ride but he wanted to go even further. At 600 he truly felt that he would be pushing his body to its limits. The added benefit of experiencing quintessential British country and seaside may have helped the decision also.

The cycle itself was a mixture of transcendent highs and terrible climbs! With the first two days in Cornwall being the most demanding but also the most beautiful. Mainly due to the long climbs in Dartmoor National Park and Weymouth which meant that Lukasz climbed over 10,000ft in elevation solely on the second day of the challenge. The hard climbs came at a tremendous benefit though – as it allowed Lukasz to meet amazing animals, such as wild horses that at times were literally blocking the road. As the journey continued the landscape became flatter and easier to transverse, allowing him to cycle further and faster. Looking back at the trip Lukasz’s highlight overall though was the ‘kindness of people along the way and beauty of the country’ he cycled through.

The money Lukasz raised will go towards the Children’s Appeal which helps bring colour and vibrancy to the children’s ward by funding things, such as beautiful murals to make the wards feel less clinical; new medical equipment and new technology like tablets and electronic games, which help all ages to learn and play while in hospital.
