Year of the Nurse and Midwife - Our September Feature

7th September 2020

This month, Matteo Spolentini is our feature for the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Matteo kindly answered our questions after a night shift as a Senior Staff Nurse on Gunning Ward so see below to find out a bit more about him and his time at St George’s…

How long have you been at St George’s hospital and what do you love about it?
I have been working at St George’s for more than 3 years. I started as a staff nurse on Gunning ward where nearly two years ago I progressed to a senior role.
I love the people who make this place what it is, from clinical to non-clinical staff, it really feels like I am a part of a big family.

What does nursing mean to you?
Being a nurse really embraces who I am, there are skills you cannot teach because they are part of who you are. Nursing is more than just providing clinical care as it means caring with knowledge, reflecting on mistakes and always finding solutions to improve the care we provide to all patients!

How has Covid-19 affected your role?
It is hard to explain because everything changed so fast and we had to adapt quickly to ensure we maintained our high standards of care in order to protect as many lives as possible. My role as a senior staff nurse did not change in terms of responsibilities but all of us had to adapt to rapid changes like new protocols and interactions with new members of different specialties. I have to say that everyone has been amazing and I believe That this challenge made us even stronger.

How has St Georges’s Hospital Charity had an impact on your role?
St George’s Hospital Charity had a huge impact, particularly during the height of the pandemic. Relatives who could stay with the patient in the last stages of life were provided with a care bag which had a huge impact. Staff were provided with food when it was hard to leave the ward, 2 iPads were also donated to allow video calls between patients and relatives and many other donations to staff! We never felt alone and it truly made the difference!

We are so grateful for Matteo, thank you!
