Celebrating Mekel Bailey!

30th October 2020

To commemorate Black History Month we wanted to shine a spotlight and celebrate one of our incredible fundraisers. Mekel Bailey. Here is his journey at St George’s Hospital.

Back in 2006, Mekel was in a coma for a total of 11 days. He woke up and his life was saved! From that point forward, he has spent the last 14 years working hard to recover and become his healthiest and best self, both physically and mentally. It has been a rollercoaster of a process but Mekel has been determined to grab life with both hands.

This September, to mark National Fitness Day, Mekel decided that he wanted to say thank you to “the doctors, nurses and all the other SUPERHEROES on Brodie Ward” by challenging his physical limits. Mekel partnered with Energise Fitness and UK Active to motive himself and others to be more active while raising money for St George’s Hospital Charity!

Between the 23rd September to the 7th of October, Mekel asked his friends, family and followers to suggest a physical challenge to carry out each day and donate to his fundraising page. He pushed himself to his physical limits, raising a fantastic £1,259!!
Not only did he raise an incredible amount, but Mekel also encouraged many other people to get active.

Mekel shared with us his fundraising highlights: "For me the best part of this, besides the challenges and raising funds, was seeing 21 of my close friends and family get active. Taking time out of their day to simply be active and share this with me socially. Again the support was tenfold and heartfelt. They all really made the effort which I was blown away by, whether it was walking, cycling, swimming even got ice skating. For the first time ever in my life I saw my mum be active and exercise which to me, makes me smile even typing this. So I would just to like to say MASSIVE THANK YOU AGAIN to everyone who donated. Roll on 2021 #HealthIsWealth”

We cannot thank Mekel enough! The money he raised will help to address Brodie Ward’s most urgent needs quickly, helping to secure items that are ‘over and above’ what is normally provided. That could be new medical equipment, facilities, staff training, and so much more.

You can still support Mekel’s fundraising and donate today.
