Year of the Nurse and Midwife - Another November Feature

This month, we are featuring Rosy Quince, Upper Gastroenterology (GI) Clinical Nurse Specialist in our Year of the Nurse and Midwife series. Rosy started at St George’s at the very start of the Covid-19 pandemic and we asked her a few questions

How long have you been at St George’s and what do you love about it?

I started at St Georges in March this year as an Upper Gastroenterology Clinical Nurse Specialist (UGI CNS). Since starting, everyone has been so friendly and helpful. Although it is a big teaching hospital it has an amazing community feel and I feel like I immediately slotted into place.

What does nursing/midwifery mean to you?

Nursing, despite being incredibly challenging at times, it is extremely rewarding. I have been a nurse for 9 years and I can’t imagine doing anything else. Being able to help people when they need it most, is my honour and I always strive to do give the best care I can.

How has Covid-19 affected your role?

I joined the trust on 23rd March to start my new role as an UGI CNS and by 28th March I had been re-deployed to ICU to help during the pandemic. Although I have previous ICU experience it was very daunting as I didn’t know the Trust, the people, the policies, the procedures and I didn’t have any passwords for the IT systems yet. It was a very challenging time and we were stretched physically and mentally to our absolute maximum. Despite being in the height of the Covid peak, everyone I worked with on CTICU were so friendly, welcoming, so supportive of myself and their colleagues and above all they gave exceptional patient care. Although it obviously wasn’t ideal to be re-deployed immediately, I am so proud to have worked with such a fantastic team.

I worked on ICU for 3 months before returning to my role as a CNS, due to Covid the majority of clinics have been changed to telephone rather than face to face, which has made shadowing and learning very challenging. Again, everyone in my new Gastro team have been exceptionally welcoming and supportive and I am looking forward to settling into my new role properly.

How has St George's Hospital Charity had an impact on your role?

During my time on ICU, the Hospital Charity delivering food and bags of treats was the highlight of every day and often the only thing to look forward to. When Covid was at its peak it was often difficult to buy food in the supermarkets and it took a weight off all of our minds knowing that there would be something for us to eat at work.

The volunteers were always so helpful and cheerful despite everything that was going on and it was very humbling to know that they were voluntarily coming into hospital to help out.

Everything that St Georges Charity has done throughout the pandemic has really helped boost morale and we couldn’t have done it without them!
