St George’s Hospital Charity to continue funding the Trust running club

We are thrilled to announce that St George’s Hospital Charity is continuing to fund the weekly running club for Trust staff.

Following the successful trial of the Staff Running Group, St George’s Hospital Charity has agreed to continue funding this project for a further three months following the great feedback from the keen runners.

Not only have the sessions proven to be beneficial for both physical and mental health, they also have had great social benefits in allowing participants to meet Trust staff from other disciplines in a more sociable setting, while socially distancing. The Staff Running Group has enabled a sense of security and support for those who found lone running in the early evening darkness to be daunting. Additionally, we have received great feedback on Nick’s skills in leading knowledgeable and supportive sessions that are inclusive for all abilities which have led to levels of improved confidence from participants.

Anna Woodcock, Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist said, ‘Just a quick email to state my support for the running club run by Nick Bester. I have thoroughly enjoyed my sessions with Nick, they are fun and have been a great opportunity to get fit and meet like-minded people in the Trust. Most importantly however, they have helped me rediscover my enjoyment of running which had dwindled following redeployment during the peaks of Covid-19 and a subsequent struggle with my mental health. The running club has been a great outlet and I would be very disappointed if it were to not continue. I am happy to spread the word, in fact two nurses in my office have expressed an interest in attending.’

Eoghan McDonnell said: ‘I am a physiotherapist working at St Georges Hospital and have been attending Nick Bester's run club every Wednesday at 5pm for the past 6 weeks. I have thoroughly enjoyed it and feel that it epitomises the kind of activities that promote the health and wellbeing of healthcare staff at St George's. As a physiotherapist, I understand the importance of exercise for our physical and mental health, which is crucial for healthcare staff in this current climate. It has most definitely been beneficial to my mental and physical health (and to others that have attended I'm sure!). On a side note, I took part in a virtual half marathon (an event organised by Nick) and achieved a PB! This would not have been possible without the support and training from Nick.’
