St George' Hospital Charity Staff Member, Shannon, Takes on the Virtual Vitality 10,000!

4th June 2021

We are proud to shout about another one of our Vitality London 10,000 runners which is our very own Shannon Gleave!

Shannon said that she chose to take on the 10km challenge as, ‘While I am reasonably active, running is not my forte! For me a 5k is a push for a run, so I decided on the Virtual Vitality London 10,000 as I think it will be a great challenge and I wanted to take part in a virtual event because I feel like it is definitely one of those bucket list things to complete during the pandemic. Kind of like the virtual quiz haha!’

She added that ‘Working for the charity means that I get to see first-hand the incredible impact that the funds raised has on the hospital and after encouraging and helping others to raise funds I knew it was my time to roll up my sleeves and raise some money as well. I decided to direct everything I raise to support the arts in the hospital because the Arts Team are so incredible and the work they do across the trust makes such a big difference to everyone who walks through the door. From the artwork on the walls all the way to patient activities and the staff art club. It brings about a more holistic approach to wellbeing of both staff, patients and their visitors.’

Not only is she taking on this 10km challenge, as part of her fundraising Shannon also decided to undertake a sponsored silence for 24 hours to help encourage my friends and family to donate. As we know working with her, Shannon is a very talkative person she said that this has been the hardest part of the challenge so far. She said, ‘By the end of the day I wanted to scream! I think the strangest thing was that for a few days afterwards every time I spoke I felt like I was doing something wrong. That was a weird one to shake off.’

Although Shannon has found the motivation to train hard in the continuing rainy weather, the generosity of friends and family have got her through, as well as the feeling of accomplishment when she made it past the 5k mark without needing to collapse by the end of her run.

We are so proud of you Shannon, if you want to support her visit her fundraising page here: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-display/showROFundraiserPage?userUrl=ShannonGleave&pageUrl=2
