Louise, Lucy, Zoe and Kirsty take on 100km from London to Brighton

11th June 2021

Last weekend, on one of the warmest weekends of the year so far, Louise and her friends took on a mammoth challenge of walking 100km from London to Brighton in aid of St George’s Hospital Charity.

Louise, Lucy, Zoe and Kirsty decided to embark on ‘a bit of a walk’ and support St George’s where Louise’s son has spent a lot of time in the children’s ward. He has been under the care of the neurosurgery paediatric team at St George’s for ten years, having had a vast number of brain surgeries, and subsequently Louise wanted to raise money towards making children's stay in hospital easier in any way she could.

Louise said that they chose this walk as ‘We wanted something that challenged us physically and mentally. We decided to do the walk on our own rather than through an organised event as we wanted to experience the countryside and views when it was less busy. We also thought we’d be ok to navigate the route on our own. We nearly did, just an extra 10km or so with some slight ‘detours’!’

And the walk did come with the mental and physical challenge, Louise added, ‘There were a lot of aches and pains towards the end of the walk, which coincided with the biggest climb to get over the South Downs to reach Brighton. Shin splits, knee pain and a whole lot of blisters. Knowing we were supporting something so close to our hearts really helped us keep going!’ Despite it being hard going at times, Louise said, ‘We loved doing the walk... Walking as a group to keep spirits lifted was amazing. It is something the four of us will remember forever!

They have raised an incredible £3,781 so far and Louise said that, ‘We have been overwhelmed by how generous people are. Friends who we haven’t had contact with for a long time have reached out and been very supportive.’

A huge well done to the team and if you want to show your support of this incredible challenge, you can donate here.
