Play Team Grant Impact: Supporting Children and Young people in Hospital

13th September 2021

Thanks to your continued support towards St George’s Hospital Charity we can make a huge impact on our children and young people’s stay in hospital by regularly funding play materials for our play service to provide – THANK YOU!

Being in hospital can be a frightening experience for all. Not only is a child/young person away from home, but also away from their usual environment, family and friends. There can be unfamiliar sounds, smells, equipment and people.

Thanks to your donations, we can regularly fund the play service to buy materials and equipment that help to give children and young people a greater hospital experience. The materials and equipment purchased by your donations provide our patients with art and craft activities, helping to normalise developmental and sensory play, and helping with distracting, alleviating boredom, pain management, and providing a coping mechanism during evasive procedures. All of which contribute heavily to the reassurance, and the recovery, recuperation and rehabilitation process for children and young people in hospital.

A BIG shout out to our essential Play service at St George’s Trust who are a team of Health Play Specialists working on the paediatric wards, including Nicholls ward, Pinckney Ward, Frederick Hewitt Ward, Jungle Ward, The Blue Sky Centre (cau), PICU and PSDU. They provide children and young people with the appropriate resources they need to help to make a hospital visit much more enjoyable, and to cope and understand different procedures which they may be experiencing.

One of our Lead Hospital Play Specialists, Justine Louise Makin, said “the provision makes a huge impact on our children and young people’s stay in hospital. Without this funding we would not be able to provide our patients with the correct resources which they desperately need.”

Your donations continue to make a huge difference to the lives of many children/young people, and their families during their visit and/or stay in hospital and we cannot thank you enough for your incredible support!
