A Charity grant was used for staff in the Neurosciences Physiotherapy team to undertake a Laughter Lab session, with the knowledge and learnings to be translated into the management of patients.

Laughter Lab is a new and different approach to boosting wellbeing, managing stress, preventing burnout, and reducing workplace bullying, using evidence-based activities in bespoke training programmes to promote the health benefits of laughter.

The purpose of the grant was not only to benefit staff but also to facilitate the assessment of the extent to which Laughter Lab could be translated into the management of patients.  A total of 25 people attended, and a short survey designed by the Charity’s Impact & Evaluation Manager was sent to all attendees.

According to the survey results, 100% of respondents considered the session of high quality, contributing to an increased understanding of the covered topics and providing a positive experience that they would recommend to other teams. Specifically, 83% agreed that the session positively impacted their emotional wellbeing, 67% believed it enhanced their ability to manage stress, 50% felt a reduction in burnout within the team, and 67% reported improved team relationships.

Stephanie Fisher, Impact and Evaluation Manager, said: "I am delighted with the overwhelmingly positive results from the Laughter Lab session, as indicated by the survey feedback.

“It's heartening to see our staff benefitting not only in their emotional wellbeing and stress management but also witnessing improved team dynamics. The enthusiasm among the participants is truly rewarding. I am particularly excited about the prospect of extending these learnings to enhance patient care.”
