Online consultation begins for our St George’s Covid-19 Commemoration Commission
11 July 2023
We are delighted to be working with award-winning design practice Wayward on a new arts commission designed with and for, staff who worked throughout the COVID-19 pandemic at St George’s Hospital. The commission will explore and reflect upon the profound impact of COVID-19 on our hospital community and will highlight the important role that the arts can play in recovery and wellbeing. The project will form a major part of the Trust’s ongoing strategy for thanking staff, with the resulting work becoming the Trust’s official commemoration for COVID-19.
This project will culminate in a space for staff, designed with staff. To develop their ideas Wayward want to gather experiences, stories and ideas from everyone here at St George’s, looking back at the pandemic and looking to the future and a place of healing.
The Wayward team were onsite for St George’s Arts Week in June where they worked with staff, patients and visitors leading creative workshops and chatting to people about the commission. The workshops included printmaking and design where people could create their own screen prints or Lego prints, as well as mapmaking workshops gathering information on people’s favourite gardens and quiet spaces here at St George’s, to create a map together.
We want to hear from more staff here at St George’s so we have set up online formats to allow for wider participation. Staff can take part by checking the intranet or Communications bulletin however, if you are a staff member at St George’s and would rather email us with your comments and ideas, please get in touch via arts@stgeorges.nhs.uk and we will pass your thoughts on to Wayward.
The responses to this interactive consultation will inspire the final design and help to make this commission for staff.
The Covid-19 Commemoration Commission is led by Arts St George’s, the arts team at St George’s Hospital Charity. To find out more about our year-round programme of creative events and activities, please click here.
