We asked Amerjit eight questions on the day of his departure and here's what he shared.

  1. What was your proudest moment/achievement?

Being here during Covid every single day and seeing the public’s determination and commitment to help keep the NHS supported and working, through their generosity, kindness and love.

On the other side, it was also standing shoulder to shoulder with the staff working flat out, supporting them where and when they needed us most.

  1. What was your most challenging moment/time and why?

Covid. I managed to secure and provide free iPads for dying patients to be able to able to say goodbye to their loved ones. However, the first lot didn’t work and as there was no-one else to help, I ended up in ICU at the peak of the pandemic with just a mask on the ward trying to get them working. I’ll never forget there was one patient who had less than an hour to live and that made me determined to succeed. Thankfully I did get them working but it was definitely one of my most challenging moments.

  1. What is your funniest memory?

Working with Jacqueline Totterdell definitely ranks high up amongst my funniest memories. She's an amazing person and leader of one of the largest trusts in the UK. She’s hasn’t lost her humanity or sense of humour and I learnt from her that you have to be visible as a leader and to communicate and to have fun.

  1. What makes you get out of bed each day for work?

Knowing that the Charity I led is making a real difference to people’s lives, and knowing that everyone in the Charity is committed to our collective success.

  1. What will you miss most?

Being part of one of the largest families I have ever known, and not just in the Charity but across the Trust too, knowing that we all care. It wasn’t just a job for me but an honour to work alongside such committed and passionate people.

  1. What advice would you give to your successor?

Take everyone with you and I know it's a cliche but in this Charity your greatest asset really is your team. Listen to and trust your instincts.

  1. What’s your parting message to your colleagues?

Keep up the good work, stay committed and true to yourself and believe in what you do. Don't doubt yourself and continue to work together.

  1. And to the Charity’s supporters?

We’re here because you believe in us. Keep that flame burning and you'll never be disappointed. Thank you for your support throughout.
