Back in 2017, Rebecca decided to give triathlons a go by joining her friend who was taking part in one, however, she had to ask another friend to lend her all the kit for her first few races. She said: "I had absolutely no idea what I was doing".

By 2018 Rebecca had qualified to represent Great Britain at the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Gold Coast, finishing 5th in her category.  The following year she achieved another 5th-place finish at the 2019 Weert ETU Triathlon European Championships.

In 2022, Rebecca achieved a podium finish at the 2022 Europe Triathlon Championships in Olsztyn, coming in second place. However, her journey took an unexpected turn last year when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Although her diagnosis forced her to rethink her competition plans for this year, making the difficult decision to put aside most of her racing commitments, one goal remained steadfast – the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, Spain.

It was a race for which she had qualified just a week before beginning her chemotherapy and Rebecca was determined to race, regardless of where she was fitness-wise.

Rebecca is not only doing the extraordinary by taking part in the World Championships, but she has also decided to use her involvement in this competition to give back for the unwavering support and exceptional care she received from the Rose Centre at St George's Hospital.

Rebecca said: "I can't thank everyone enough at the hospital enough for how well they've looked after me. I had no idea of the plans in place and didn't expect it to all go so 'smoothly'. Everyone has always been so friendly and helpful, it made the whole experience so much less stressful."

Despite a few injuries and a tough race at the Europe Triathlon Championships in Madrid back in June, Rebecca is gearing up for the Pontevedra race and said she is hugely excited to finish it, she said: "I get so nervous that I wonder why I put myself through it all, but the feeling afterwards is fantastic. I'm hoping for a better race than the Euros in June, so I'll be pleased with that.’"

She has smashed her fundraising target, raising an impressive £1,685 and counting, but we would love for you to join us in cheering her on and contributing to her cause by donating to her page here:  Rebecca Lewis' JustGiving
