Royal Parks Half Marathon Spotlight - Amber & Deana
27 September 2023
Friends Amber and Deana signed up to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon after deciding that they wanted to mix up their routines. Neither of them had done a half marathon before and after speaking to a friend that works at St George’s Hospital about the Time for a Change Appeal and the work it sets out to do, they decided it would be the perfect challenge for them both to take on and do some good at the same time.
Amber said, ‘Thank you all for the incredible work you do at St Georges, I've known people who have needed the support you give on the children's ward and the help provided really doesn't go unnoticed.’
They signed up together, so neither of them could back out, and then started their training. Although there were a few issues at the beginning, and they were starting from zero so it was rather daunting, they were both determined to see it through and surprisingly, they are now really enjoying training for the race. They have been running into work, which has been a great way to start their day and have found it really encouraging tracking their progress and being able to go further and further every time they go out. These training runs have also served as the perfect outlet for any workplace gossip!
Not only are they raising funds by taking part in the race, but they are also putting on a charity karaoke night to boost their fundraising, which might even result in a cheeky rap performance of their own rap written about taking on this challenge (check out their JustGiving page).
With the race day approaching, their anticipation is growing. They look forward to the atmosphere of the event, the encouragement of the crowd, the energy given by the jelly babies along the course, and the satisfaction of completing their first half marathon.
We are so grateful to Amber and Deana for taking on this challenge for St George’s Hospital and wish them a huge good luck for race day! You can wish them good luck too by donating to their fundraising page here!
