St George’s Hospital Charity Welcomes Distinguished Advocate and Photographer Gemma Levine as New Ambassador
25 November 2024
Gemma’s journey into advocacy for lymphoedema began 15 years ago following her own diagnosis. Since then, she has been relentless in her efforts, collaborating with leading specialists to support and advance awareness of Lymphoedema.
Through her leadership, Gemma has led influential projects and campaigns, including her series of published books and many memorable fundraising events. Most recently, in May 2024, she orchestrated the celebrated ‘An Evening with Dame Judi Dench’ at Claridge’s, raising over £40,000 to support lymphoedema research. Her fundraising activities have now generated more than £100,000 for the cause, a testament to her commitment and impact.
Lymphoedema is a disease caused by a compromised lymphatic system, thought to affect over 200,000 people in the UK. The Lymphoedema Research Fund at St George’s Hospital Charity is meeting the urgent need for expanded research into lymphatic system diseases to pave the way for innovative treatments for future patients.
Thanks to dedicated advocates like Gemma, St George’s Hospital Charity has been able to support groundbreaking strides in lymphoedema research and awareness.
Professor Peter Mortimer, Professor of Dermatological Medicine at St George’s Hospital, who founded the lymphoedema service and research programme nearly 40 years ago, said: “The lymphatic system is essential for human health, yet its importance remains under-recognised. Due to limited awareness, many doctors receive no formal training on lymphoedema, leading to delayed or missed diagnoses for many people.
"Working with Gemma has been an honour; her commitment to raising awareness and funds has been invaluable in advancing much-needed research.
"Funding from these efforts has enabled us to grant our first research award, an essential step in educating healthcare professionals and improving patient outcomes.”
As ambassador, Gemma will continue her close work with St George’s Hospital Charity, bringing her insights and influence to heighten awareness, deepen understanding of lymphoedema, and drive further fundraising efforts.
Reflecting on her appointment, Gemma Levine said: “I am deeply honoured to become an ambassador for St George’s Hospital Charity and to continue supporting the Lymphoedema Research Fund, which is close to my heart.
"My journey with lymphoedema has shown the importance of increasing awareness, advancing research, and offering hope to those affected by this under-recognised condition of which I am passionate about driving greater understanding and funding.
"I am thrilled to work alongside the remarkable team at St George’s, to ensure a lasting impact in the field. Together, we can bring about meaningful change for patients both now and in the future, with the ultimate aim of securing a cure.”
Katy Vaughan, CEO of St George’s Hospital Charity, stated: “We are delighted to welcome Gemma Levine as an ambassador for St George’s Hospital Charity. Her unwavering commitment to advancing lymphoedema research aligns seamlessly with our mission to foster innovative health research and enhance patient care.
"With the Lymphoedema Research Fund as a core priority, Gemma’s vision and dedication will be instrumental in driving this essential work forward. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for her transformative contributions over the past 15 years, and we look forward to embarking on meaningful projects together.”
