St George's Hospital Charity was nominated for and won a Tooting Heroes Award on Monday 13 June at a special ceremony in the houses of Parliament, hosted by the Awards’ founder and Labour MP for Tooting, Dr Rosena Allin-Khan.

The Charity received the award for “working to fund improvements to our brilliant local hospital and their vital support provided during the pandemic.”

Amerjit Chohan, Chief Executive of the Charity, and Molly Simpson, Events and Community Fundraising Manager received the award on behalf of the Charity.

Many other local organisations were recognised as part of the awards including St Mary's Church, Balham, whose Assistant Curate, The Revd Berni Excell, took part in our three-day abseil event in March, Balham and Tooting Newsie, Dons Local Action Group, and Balham and Tooting Community Association.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP commented:

“I was delighted to welcome organisations and individuals from across Balham, Earlsfield, Furzedown and Tooting to Parliament, to recognise their fantastic contributions to our society in the face of adversity over the last few years.

"It was a sheer joy to see the pillars of our communities together in one place and I look forward to continuing to collaborate and support the inspiring people who do so much for the local area.

“Well done to St George’s Hospital Charity for their Award and to all the other winners too. I cannot overstate how proud I am of our community. Each and every one of them is a true Tooting Hero.”

Amerjit Chohan, Chief Executive of the Charity, said:

“We’re thrilled and honoured to have our work recognised with this Award. It’s been especially challenging, yet rewarding, to be there for all our staff and for our patients throughout the pandemic.

"I am so proud of the staff and volunteers in the Charity, who pulled out all the stops to ensure that we were able to deliver several successful initiatives, like ‘Lunch on us’ and ‘Music while you wait’ for the staff and for the patients. Thank you to Dr Rosena Allin-Khan and her team for this award which I humbly accept on behalf of everyone at the Charity.”
