Volunteering is a wonderful way to stay connected, share your skills and make a real difference in your community

Alan, one of our cherished volunteers, has been bringing his knowledge, kindness and dedication to St George’s Hospital Charity for over 8 years. Whether you’ve met him in the charity office or passed him in the hospital corridors, Alan’s friendly smile and helpful spirit brightens the day for everyone.

What inspired you to volunteer for St. George’s Hospital Charity?

After retiring from full-time employment, I felt I still had something to offer. I found myself wanting to stay active and contribute meaningfully to my community. St George’s Hospital Charity immediately stood out as a perfect fit—it gave me the platform to use my life skills while giving back to my local community.

Can you share more about the volunteering role or activities you’re involved in?

I get involved in a variety of tasks, from data input to supporting events. This variety keeps things interesting and means I’m always learning something new. What I enjoy about the events is that it means helping to improve the hospital experience for all patients, families and staff.  I hope my efforts help make the Charity more visible so that more people understand and support the incredible work being done.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT WHEN VOLUNTEERING?

One of the highlights for me is meeting the fundraisers. Many of them are truly inspirational, and the annual supporter thank-you event is something I look forward to every year. I also enjoy selling Christmas cards and counting down the days to Christmas with both staff and patients—it’s a simple tradition that brings everyone together and hands down my favourite time of the year!

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering with St George’s Hospital Charity?

Just do it. There are so many opportunities throughout the year, and people bring a wide range of skills that can make a real difference. For me, knowing that what I do for the hospital is appreciated gives me a warm feeling and keeps me coming back.

George's Hospital Charity extends a heartfelt thanks to all our amazing volunteers. We could not do what we do without them.

If you have a passion to help us in supporting our hospitals, there are many exciting ways that you can get involved - from challenge events to volunteer positions.
