Funding research to make a positive impact on patient outcomes within the Trust and the wider NHS
The purpose of the Research Funding Programme is to advance clinical research at St George’s in line with the research strategy agreed with the Trust and the University, with a different focus every year. As part of our charitable objectives, we are committed to supporting our hospitals and the University to undertake pioneering research and invest in the research training and development of hospital staff for the benefit of patients.
Our ambition is that successful applicants will be able to utilise the skills and data produced in research projects to springboard onto successful funding bids for further study.
Call for applications
When the Charity receives funding for specific research (other than via SPFs), it will announce its invitation to apply via the charity website, the Trust, and the University. Only Trust and University employees are eligible to apply. Typically the call for applications is held once a year. We are particularly supportive of developing collaborative research between the Trust and the University.
Approval Process
It is a competitive process. The applications are reviewed and scored by the Charity’s Medical Advisory Group (MAG) which then makes recommendations for funding to the Charity’s Board of Trustees. The MAG members, who have expertise in assessing research applications, are:
Applications must be endorsed by JRES (Joint Research and Enterprise Service) before being submitted to the MAG. JRES is the support function for research grant applications for both the Trust and the University. Research grants are administered via JRES in conjunction with the Charity.
How to apply
Research funding is available through two funding streams; either our restricted Research Funding Programme (as described above) or Special Purpose Fund (SPF) research funds. SPF research funds are accessed via the usual SPF application process.
The Charity will announce a call for non-SPF research applications according to funding availability. This is generally once a year as they become available. We will provide an application form according to the specifics of the funding available.
