St George’s Hospital Charity have appointed two new professional artists, to take on the baton from the first cohort of Resident Artists and collaborate with patients, staff and visitors to bring arts and creativity to our hospitals.

Following on from the success of our fantastic first cohort of Resident Artists at St George’s, the new Resident Artists will plan and lead high-quality creative sessions with patients, their families and staff, helping improve the experience of being in hospital.

Coming in for one day a week each, they will deliver sessions in public spaces, outpatient clinics and inpatient wards across St George’s University Hospitals Foundation Trust sites, encouraging people to take part.

After a rigorous and competitive recruitment process, the Charity is delighted to announce the selected artists are Heather McClelland (musician) and Phoebe Kaniewska (visual artist).

Each artist has been chosen on reflection of their ability to adapt and develop their artistic excellence for healthcare settings, sharing innovative ideas for working collaboratively with our hospital community. As a cohort, the Resident Artists represent a range of experience and cultural backgrounds including extensive experience working in healthcare settings.

Caitriona Ni Mhuiris, Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse For Personalised Care, explained: “It’s really exciting having lovely, warm, creative people around the hospital, making our patients’ stay a little brighter.

"We can’t wait to meet them!”

Alex Botha, Interim Chief Executive, St George’s Hospital Charity, noted: “We are delighted to be welcoming in two new talented and inspiring artists to our hospitals.

"We know that the St George’s Resident Artist programme has had a hugely positive impact on our hospital community to date, and we are excited to see what the future holds for the initiative, delivered by Heather and Phoebe and managed by our Arts Team.”

The artists will start their work on site in the week commencing  Monday 30 October. Heather will visit each Tuesday, and Phoebe each Thursday. If you, or a patient in your care would like a visit from one of our artists, please email arts@stgeorges.nhs.uk and we will do our best to arrange this.

Speaking of her involvement in the initiative, Phoebe Kaniewska said: “I am so excited to share some new art skills with patients and families at St George’s Hospital, and use visual art to help tell people’s stories and experiences.”

Heather McClelland added: "I’m really excited about starting my music residency at St George’s and I can’t wait to explore the positive impact that music can have on patients, their families, and the incredible staff in this world class hospital."
